On Thursday 19th January, both our 6th classes travelled up to Cork Institute of Technology to participate in the VEX IQ Robotics Competition. This project involved the design and assembly of a working robot which was programmed by our students to respond to a remote control or to drive and work itself. The robot would compete in a game called “Crossover”. We also had to create and maintain an engineering notebook, detailing every aspect of the process. Additionally, the boys had to create a STEM video presentation – we chose the topic of ‘Robotics in Education’.
The boys had worked extremely hard over the previous 4 months and travelled with our robot Gizmo with great excitement. We had to compete in 3 robot challenges during the day. Our engineering notebook was submitted to the judges for inspection once we arrived. The judges also visited our stand in the pit, where our boys described the project and answered their questions.
Our drivers Mikolaj and Fionn performed superbly on the day, getting us to the final match of the competition (You can see an example of their fantastic skills below). We finished in 4th place out of a total of 50 teams. At the end of a long day, seven awards were given out in total. To our delight, our students won the Best Design Award. Congratulations to all of 6th class on this fantastic achievement!
