MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO SUPPORTED OUR ANNUAL EASTER EGG RAFFLE FUNDRAISER. A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE MEMBERS OF OUR PARENTS' COUNCIL WHO ORGANISED THIS VERY IMPORTANT FUNDRAISER. HERE ARE SOME OF OUR WINNERS..........
We have a very industrious and dedicated parents’ council. They began the school year by organising a red and white jersey day. This was followed by a cake day in October. A very successful” Cash for Clobber “ initiative that raised substantial funds for the school. A very popular chocolate raffle was held before Christmas. The hard work of the parents’ council continued in the second term with the organisation of Pancake Day. This was a particularly creative endeavour as local businesses supplied the pancakes. A bag-packing event was organised in Tesco on 14th and 15th March. The boys really enjoyed the opportunity to participate and become involved in the local community. An Easter Egg Raffle will be organised in April. The 80’s disco scheduled for June in a new departure that will provide an opportunity for all to become more closely involved in the school community.
The funds raised by these events were used to purchase new basketball boards, basketball net and other P.E. equipment. The diligence and creative endeavours of our parent’s council provide huge support to the work within the school and is greatly appreciated. An active and diligent parents’ council is a huge asset to our school and provides an opportunity to become more familiar with the workings of the school. World Book Day Fest Celebration was the 6th of March. There were many activities in our school to mark this special event. All of the students were presented with a book token – thanks to Ms. O Leary for organising this. The boys from first, second and third class participated in our very own book quiz. Mr. Cronin kindly took up his annual role as quizmaster and the children, working in their teams, conferred with each other to answer questions based on well-known books. Congrats to everyone who took part and well done to the winners and also our runners up who each received a prize. It was wonderful to see everyone having fun on this day and we will remember “a book is a gift that we can open again and again” Each year, during the Lenten period, boys from Midleton C.B.S. Primary School fund raise for the missionary efforts in India. The boys take a Calcutta jar and in which they put any loose change. Brother O’Connor, a former teacher in this school, came to visit the boys to thanks them for their efforts and tell them where their money went. The boys were told that the money helped transform the lives of the people in Kolkata. Their money was used to provide wells in each village and access to education for children in these villages. Brother O’Connor emphasised the long tradition of charity in our school that has passed from generation to generation. He stated that in this area a little means a lot and over 5,000 people have benefitted from the water project alone.
The boys from 2nd class received the Sacrament of Penance on the 4th of March. The children worked very carefully with their teachers to prepare for this special occasion. The boys were very reverend and respectful in the church and each boy completed their role very nicely. We are grateful to Annette Moynihan for helping us with the music on the evening. Congrats to all involved. We are very proud of you boys and we wish you well as you prepare for your First Holy Communion, which will take place on Saturday the 24th of May at 10am in the Church of the Holy Rosary.
East Cork Rapid Unit visited our school on Wednesday, 12th March. The aim of the unit is pre-hospital emergency care to victims of sudden illness such as heart attacks, road traffic accident, farming and industrial accidents. Eoghan Healy, Paul Treanor and John Coleman spoke about the service provided by the unit in the East Cork area. Paul Treanor, an advanced paramedic, showed the children a variety of equipment explaining their uses. The children were also told how to contact the service. This visit is part of an educational to raise awareness of the service.
On Friday 7th of March, up to 60 excited Midleton C.B.S. Primary pupils ranging from 1st class to 6th class congregated at Hurley’s Supervalu Car Park with staff members and local journalists. Rith 2014 (www.rith.ie) is a new national festival for Ireland that took place from 7-15th of March as one of the main events of Seachtain na Gaeilge. A 700km course was set up for a nonstop relay run from Cork to Belfast with different groups running every kilometre. Rith 2014 ran over nine days and nights with tens of thousands of people taking part. It is a brand new way of raising money for communities throughout Ireland to visibly celebrate the Irish language and culture. The pupils of Midleton C.B.S. Primary started their 1km leg , our fantastic runners set off from Hurley’s Supervalu, proceeded up the Main Street and finished a short time later by St. Coleman's Secondary School. They were greeted with lots of encouragement and well wishes from family, friends and locals throughout this 1km journey.
